Jónsvika Art Residency and Festival

 

A week long art residency and festival in Kaldbak, Húsavík, Iceland 11. – 16. June 2012.

 

JÓNSVIKA is a week long art residency in Húsavík for young emerging visual artists, in the North of Iceland during the summer solstice in Iceland, where the sun never sets, over the week of 11.- 16. June 2012. The residency results in an art festival taking place on the last day, saturday the 16th of June, with an exhibition during the day and a music performance during the evening.

 

JÓNSVIKA RESIDENCY:

The JÓNSVIKA art residency will take place over a week, from 11. – 16. June. Around 8 artists will participate. Focus will be put towards choosing artists that make a cross over between city and countryside, different media, different methods and different cultures.

The residency will take place in an old farm house, Kaldbakur, right outside the town of Húsavík, which is a small remote fishing village in the North east of Iceland with around 200 inhabitants.

Over the week the artists will work freely on their works and projects, as well as following a schedule of activities, that will involve Kundalini yoga sessions in the mornings, breakfast and a morning dialogues and talks as well as lectures. The speakers and contributors will come from Husavik and educate and inform the artists on different subjects, i.e. art education in the Húsavík secondary school, the Husavik Museum, the Husavik Whale museum etc. The schedule also involves visits to towns and local manufactures, such as to the net making factory, the steal garage, the carpentry, the recycling factory and more.

These various activities will work as an inspiration and as a new approach towards the production of their art works. The endeavor will result in an art festival – JÓNSVIKA.

The JÓNSVIKA Festival will take place on 16th of June 2012 in Kaldbak, Húsavík.

FREE ADMISSION FOR GUESTS!

The exhibition will open at 15.00 on Saturday. The works displayed will be works that the artists have produced during the week and will be inspired by their stay in Húsavík and the activities there.

At 20.00 the same day music acts will take place on the attic of the Cow shed, with a fantastic view of the mountains, the lake and the seaside.

MESSA Vision 2012 is the next event in line preceding the MESSA Art Fair which will be held in the spring of 2013 in Reykjavík, Iceland.

MESSA Vision is a creative collaboration which will focus on presenting the ideas behind the concept of an art fair for the benefit of the Icelandic and international art scenes as well as the general public. MESSA Vision will embody the experience, the platform, the framework, and the networking – among other aspects – of international art fairs through a weekend of events designed to offer the audience a better understanding of this significant facet of the art world.

Symposium – Art Fairs: Gateway to the International Art Market

The Symposium will be held at the Nordic House, Sturlugötu 5, 101 Reykjavík, www.nordice.is

This symposium will feature speakers touching on topics such as the organization and implementation of international art fairs, reasons to participate in the international art market, the role of artists, collectors, and galleries, and the skills solo artists need to hone in order to represent themselves.

Our keynote speaker is Andreas Ribbung, one of the founders of the artist-run gallery Candyland in Stockholm, Sweden and SUPERMARKET – Stockholm Independent Art Fair, the international artist-run art fair. He also works with art in the public realm as a freelance art advisor and project manager.

Jónsvika art residency program – 8 artists have been chosen to participate

8 artists have been chosen to participate in Jónsvika – art residency and festival in Kaldbak, Húsavík, North Iceland. Around 30 application were submitted. The committee looked at the artist´s experience and education, the artist statement and their prior experience in collaborative projects and workshops and residencies. The form of media also had an impact on the choice.

The organisers sincerely hope that this who did not get a place at this years Jósnvika, will try again in a year.

In May the organisers will announce the name of the participating artists, as well as the music acts confirmed, so please stay tuned here and here.

MESSA Vision 2012

MESSA Vision 2012

MESSA Vision is next in line preceding the MESSA Art Fair in Reykjavík, which will be held in spring 2013.

The Messa Art Fair is:

-  Alternative art fair focusing on a collaborate of individual or freelance artists representing themselves directly.

-  New opportunity for artists to cultivate their future careers.

-  Crossover between art scenes, sharing knowledge, experience and support.

-  Link to the international art world with exposure, connections and sales.

Framkvæmdafélag listamanna, FRAFL, is the innovator of the project but other important players have been involved from the beginning, contributing and implementing to essential factors of the project.

Private institutions and organisation have also contributed to the project, both directly and indirectly, i.e. European Youth in Action project, Promote Iceland, the Icelandic Association of Icelandic Artists, the Icelandic Academy of Arts, the Reykjavík Arts Festival, as well as private partners and contributors, i.e. Kex Hostel, Oddi prenststofa, Vífilfell etc.

In 2011 the team of MESSA organizers set-up a small scale teaser event called MESSA Teaser. MESSA Teaser featured a group of galleries, artists and publications which were all distributed an exhibition space to showcase their work.

MESSA Vision is another small-scale teaser event that will be set-up in 2012, during the weekend of June 1-3. The event will be promoted in collaboration with the Reykjavík Arts Festival.

MESSA Vision will represent the MESSA brand, the experience, the venue, the networking, the platform, the representation, the framework and other aspects of international art fairs.

Jónsvika Residency and Festival

JÓNSVIKA is a week long art residency in the North of Iceland for young emerging visual artists during the week of 11.- 16. June 2012. The residency results in an art festival taking place on the last day, Saturday the 16th of June, with an exhibition during the day and a music performance during the evening.

Around 10 artists will participate in the residency. Focus will be put towards choosing artists that make a cross over between city and countryside, different media, different methods and different cultures.

During the residency the artists will participate in various activities, which will work as an inspiration and a new approach towards the production of their art works. The endeavor will result in an art festival – JÓNSVIKA.

JÓNSVIKA will take place in an old farm house, Kaldbakur, right outside the town of Húsavík, which is a small remote fishing village in the North east of Iceland.

The artists are invited to stay at Kaldbak for 1 week. Each artist gets a made up bed but some have to share a room. A breakfast buffet and dinner will be provided free of charge, as well as free transport to the town when needed, a small budget for material and set up/take down cost, help with collecting material for works, other technical assistance, etc. The only cost is therefore the travel to Húsavík, lunch and other personal extra cost.

The schedule will though not be too tight, to give the artists the time they need to work on their projects.

FESTISVALL

FESTISVALL, an art event in cooperation with gogoyoko and FRAFL, will take place on Culture Night in Reykjavík on 20th of August 2011.

FESTISVALL is held for the second time in Hjartargarðurinn, one of the biggest and most exciting and vibrant outdoor spaces in Reykjavík downtown.  This year event will also take place in Hemmi og Valdi, Faktorý, Bar11 and Macland port. The event will consist of visual art works, design and music.
